L’oe Show is a Wild Trip Back to Our VW Roots

L’oe Show is a Wild Trip Back to Our VW Roots

Like so many European car enthusiasts of a certain age, the crew here at VintagEuro all got started in Volkswagens. We had base-model Rabbits, in fact, because 1) aircooled VWs were already old news when we got our licenses; 2) the Rabbit GTI may have been affordable for a German performance car, but it was still beyond our reach; and 3) the then-new Golf GTI was still hot off the presses.

In time, we and many of our friends fell into the burgeoning VW tuning scene of the mid-1990s, the explosion in their popularity fueled by internet user groups and discussion forum sites like VWvortex. Massive gatherings like Waterfest and H2O International turned these digital connections into real friendships. A true community took hold despite not being bound by a formal club like Porsche, BMW, or Mercedes owners.

This scene has only grown in popularity with the addition of off-road vehicles and crossovers to the VW lineup, drawing entirely new owners to the crowd. Add to that a cross-cultural effect of maturing Volkswagen owners remaining connected as they move upmarket into Audi and Porsche vehicles and you have a much larger community to draw from.

And that’s where Jamie Orr and his annual L’oe Show event comes in.

Every Labor Day weekend since 2021, the L’oe Show has brought thousands of Volkswagen enthusiasts from across the country (and indeed, from well beyond) to Pottstown, Pennsylvania for what can only be described as a cult festival. Memories of our beloved Waterfest now look like a county fair, where L’oe Show is like Comic-Con for modded-‘Dub lovers.

Each year since that original event was held in a dying shopping mall, Jamie has surprised showgoers (as well as Pottstown’s citizenry) with an ever-evolving festival uniquely tailored to ecclectic Volkswagen community. And this year’s event was no exception.

It would be impossible to describe all the unique elements that set L’oe apart from other scene shows. The complete takeover of the entire downtown Pottstown business district alone is a surreal feat. Add to that the use of vacant storefronts for merch vendor pop-up stores, such as RotiForm wheels and Milltek exhausts taking up camp in the showroom of a former motorcycle dealership.

We fail to do this event justice in words and pictures alone. It simply has to be experienced to be comprehended. But for now, check out the gallery and maybe we’ll see you there next year.
